Finding my way in a completely new country had a profound impact on my life. In 1989, after various wanderings, I decided to settle in the Limburg village of Beesel. There I discovered the ceramic industry, which was in full bloom at the time. It felt like coming home to me and it was a natural choice to start working with clay, something in which I had always had a passion. I followed an apprenticeship programme and completed a technical course in fine ceramics in Gouda. In 1991, I moved to a listed building in the village centre of Beesel, where I both live and work. With each new piece or commission, I strive for innovation and use both old and contemporary techniques to achieve the desired result. Life leaves traces, just as I leave my traces in the clay. A trace is a path to something familiar, but also to something new. • Rinie | Greswaren | CindyHeldens

Baas Janssen Meer verhalen

  • Nellie | Greswaren | CindyHeldens

Nellie's verhaal 00:00 / 01:33 Audio excerpt transcribed: I am Nellie, the eldest daughter of boss Janssen. I lived in the house attached to the factory until I was 21. We experienced everything there. I experienced the war there, I can still remember it very well. A grenade hit our house, I can still remember that very well. That, above all, it was broken. The fact that lightning struck more often and that all the electrical pipes burst open was very frightening. Furthermore, I really enjoyed living there, but yes, there was no real room for maneuver. We were not allowed in the clay cave, even though we went there secretly. Every day the clay train came by and went from Teeuwen via the Keulseweg to the German border to collect clay. It was a spectacle every day when he came by. What I also remember is that when there was a wedding, the factory workers would put bowls in clay and place them in the middle of the road, and when the wedding procession passed by they would throw coins into them. When the procession was gone, the workers rushed outside to see what was inside. This they did divide themselves together. I don't actually know what they did with the money, but I suspect they went for a beer together. Janssen family summer 1948 Jan, Har, Nellie, Rinie and Els. Baas Janssen More stories

  • Rinie | Greswaren | CindyHeldens

Rinie's verhaal 00:00 / 01:26 Audio excerpt transcribed: My name is Rinie Janssen, we used to live near the factory. My father was Janssen's boss. He worked at Teeuwen for more than 50 years and we had a wonderful time there as children. For example, if we needed our father, and he was in the factory. Nowadays they have cell phones, but back then we had a klaxon, or a toot as they called it back then. Then we had to press the key “short long short” and he came. There was a very large chimney next to the house, when we put papers in it, which we weren't actually allowed to do, but yes, every now and then we were naughty and we pushed newspapers into it and they came out above. And when a thunderstorm hit us on top of the chimney, where we pushed those pieces of paper into, our lights went out. Then father had to go into the factory because otherwise we would be in the dark and we would have to turn in some kind of fuse. We used to wash once a week, nowadays we jump in the shower, but then we didn't have a shower, we went in a large zinc tub, but yes, that was a lot of work, Hot water had to be made on the stove and a lot of water went into that bowl. Washing in the factory was a convenience, so they didn't have to do anything at home. Janssen family summer 1948 Jan, Har, Nellie, Rinie and Els. Baas Janssen More stories
