Hay's verhaal 00:00 / 01:33 Audio excerpt transcribed: My name is Hay Martens, born and raised in Reuver. We lived opposite the factory where my father worked. The Greswaren factory. When I went to school I took a technical course and when I finished that I started in the forge. Go and try a week or a few weeks at the forge, see if they are of any use to you there, and then we will talk about the wages. That's how it was in those days. My first job was to crawl through a hole that I could just fit through and I had to get these really big iron balls from a grinder. They were sitting outside with two adults saying, hey, hurry up. I had sweat on my forehead, but I was the smallest and could fit through it hole of the chamotte mill where the pipes were ground again. Sometimes it was said that you did well, but usually it was about continuing to work and learning. We also sometimes got into trouble out! In the forge you had a large hood hanging over the fire, and we would throw bullets onto that hood from a distance. Under the hood the blacksmith stood working on the blacksmith's fire, the hood was to catch the smoke, there was always dust and other junk on it, and so it all fell into the blacksmith's neck, haa haa, then we had to make sure we got away quickly because then we almost had the hammer that the blacksmith had in his hands thrown at us. Nellie's verhaal 00:00 / 01:33 Audiofragment getranscribeerd: Ik ben Nellie, de oudste dochter van baas Janssen. Ik heb tot mijn 21ste in het huis dat vast stond aan de fabriek gewoond. Daar hebben wij van alles meegemaakt. De oorlogstijd heb ik daar meegemaakt, dat kan ik me nog heel goed herinneren. Aan het huis bij ons vast is er een granaat is ingeslagen, dat kan ik mij ook nog heel goed herinneren. Dat boven alles kapot was. Dat vaker de bliksem insloeg en dat alle elektrische buizen open sprongen, dat was heel beangstigend. Verder heb ik er heel graag gewoond maar ja, echt speelruimte was er niet. We mochten niet in de kleikrot, terwijl dat we er toch stiekem ingingen. Elke dag kwam het klei treintje langs die ging van Teeuwen via de Keulseweg naar de Duitse grens klei halen. Dat was elke dag een spektakel als hij langs kwam. Wat ik me ook nog kan herinneren is dat als er een bruiloft was dat de fabrieksarbeiders schaaltjes in klei stopten en midden op de weg zetten, als de trouwstoet dan langs kwam gooiden ze daar munten in. Als de stoet weg was dan stormden de arbeiders naar buiten om te kijken wat er in zat. Dit deden ze zich samen verdelen. De levensduur is een belangrijk aspect voor de keramist. Als gevolg van het stookproces kan keramiek uitzonderlijk lang meegaan en mede door de natuurlijke ingrediënten is keramiek een zeer duurzaam product. Sinds 2016 zorgen 33 zonnepanelen voor de gehele energie behoefte in het atelier. The term ceramic comes from the word “keramos” which stands for loam, or “work made of earth”. For centuries "ceramics" has been the collective name. MAINTENANCE All ceramics are dishwasher safe. Made of stoneware clay fired in electric and gas ovens to a minimum of 1240 degrees. Since each piece is hand formed, no piece is exactly the same. This gives the ceramic its special character. The irregularities make each piece unique. REUSE Artifacts and decorative objects usually do not lose their value and are completely "re-used". In addition, ceramic residues can be ground into granulate and recycled into new ceramic products. Even at the end of the life cycle, ceramic products are harmless to people and the environment. SUSTAINABLE Longevity is an important aspect for the ceramist. Due to the firing process, ceramics can last an exceptionally long time and partly due to the natural ingredients, ceramics are a very sustainable product. Since 2016, 33 solar panels provide the entire energy requirement in the studio. All products are colorfast and require no maintenance. PRECIOUS PRODUCTS Most ceramic products are lastingly valued for their aesthetic value combined with a good user experience. They form the backdrop of our daily lives, and have been for centuries. NATURAL RESOURCES Clay is a widely available raw material. The amount of clay used annually by ceramists is very small. Research by Deltares (2009) confirms that more clay is deposited in the Dutch floodplains by the rivers every year than is mined by humans. In a small group of up to six enthusiasts, I’ll guide you through the art of pottery wheel throwing. Over the course of 12 Wednesday evenings, you’ll discover the joy and skill of working with clay at the pottery wheel. Both beginners and more experienced potters are welcome.
